Mike Modano scores his 500th goal

Hockey
On Tuesday night, Mike Modano joined a very elite group of athletes becoming only the 39th player in NHL history to net 500 goals.  Given Mike Modano's early career when he was known as an offensive-only player (if somewhat of a liability), he was on pace for hitting this mark ealier in his career.  However, through influences of Bob Gainey and Ken Hitchcock, Mike Modano modified his game considerably to become a strong 2-way player, giving up potentially higher total numbers in an effort to be a more well rounded and stronger player.   The goal was also a big moment for John Klemm who clocked his 100th assist on the goal, although it was certainly overshadowed last night!  I am sure it is cool for him to be a part of that moment though.   Modano is now one of only 2 US-born players to reach this, the other being Joe Mullen with 502.  Barring some career ending disaster, I think it is safe to say that Mike Modano will soon hold the record for US born player.

Vote for Rory! NHL Superstar

Hockey

This year, the NHL decided to allow people to vote as often as they like for their choices in the NHL All Star game that will be held here in Dallas (finally!) next month. The key words in that first sentence were "as often as they like". Some enterprising web guy decided to make it his crusade to get a bottom-of-the-barrel defenseman that has bounced from team to team and from majors to minors and back again, his shot as an NHL All Star! (more here... )

Enter... www.VoteForRory.com. Due almost exclusively to this site, Rory Fitzpatrick is currently second place among voting for all NHL players in the league, far ahead even of the likes of Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Pronger, an some of the sure bets you expect to see every year. As one might expect, a number of people are outraged by this. Me? I find it pretty dang funny, although I have a feeling the voting procedure might be adjusted next year! :)

Here are a few of the many "campaign videos" that have been produced for Rory. More here...

My second favorite hockey moment: Redwings and Avalanche brawl from 1997

Kids, Hockey

I have thought about this game many times in the last ten years and thanks to YouTube I get to see it again! This game was utter intensity as they were both fighting into the start of the playoffs. When Claude Lemieux pounded Kris Draper's face into the boards along the bench crushing his orbital bone, things absolutely exploded. Shortly after Darren McCarty relentlessly beat the snot out of Lemieux.  Even goalies Mike Vernon and Patrick Roy met at center ice to pounded it out. There was a camera angle I saw at the time that didn't show up very well in this. That was when Roy was skating from the goal to join the fight and was clotheslined by (I think??) Brendan Shannahan.  If I find that angle I will add that to this entry later. Anyway... hockey fan or not, watch and enjoy!
